The documentary film by director Tetiana Stanieva "From bloom to Flame" was made with the support of the European Union, House of Europe and in co-production with the NGO "Bessarabia Development Center". 20 thousand euros were received for the implementation of the project.
The film tells about the Christmas tradition of making wax flowers among ethnic Bulgarians living in the south of the Odessa region, in the village Krynychne, about a tradition interrupted by war. In it, we see the invisible consequences of the destruction caused by war. War literally kills culture, identity, traditions by making it impossible to repeat the performance. The film for the first time raises the issue of preserving intangible cultural heritage in general and the culture of national minorities in particular.
The film contains footage from six years ago, that is, the history we contemplate lasts 6 years. So before the Pandemic and before the Great War, girls gathered at parties and made a flower from the wax. For the last time. Almost six years later, they gather in the same house to melt flowers and make trench candles. The children who were generous become warriors, make candles, and thus the viewer sees the entire drawn-out flow of time.
Through the image of the melted flower, we see how the fire of war literally dissolves our culture.
The premiere of the film “From Bloom to Flame” took place at the Opening of the OKO Film Festival in 2025 in Kyiv, as well as in Sofia (Bulgaria).
